Last New Year's Eve our hosts asked us to supply a game so I thought I'd find the meanings of the first names of all the guests at the party. I read out the meaning and the game was to guess who I was describing. It wasn't always that obvious !
So I've done the same thing with my list of possible names for my hens. These are names I like which I haven't used for pets or children with the exception of Rosie who was our lovely dog when we lived in Spain.
Griffin says these are, " very Laura Ashley names " Oh, how about Laura the hen ?
Here they are:
Martha.... Lady, Molly.... Sea of Bitterness, Rosie.... from the rose, Millie.... mild strength, Henrietta.... ruler of the home, Samantha.... listener, Esme.... emerald, Phoebe....bright, Caitlin....pure.
I will not have Penny under any circumstances but I do know a Penny the hen...it means Silent worker or weaver. Penelope pure wife of Odysseus.
Beautiful names! I especially like Martha. We have three peckers; Gemma (a Sussex Star), Nancy (a Bluebelle) and Charlotte (A Blackrock) We got them in March and they have been the best thing ever! So much fun. We free-range them though so I'm on constant chicken poo patrol. If they didn't crap everywhere they would be perfect! Welcome to blogland. Xx
ReplyDeleteHi Bad Penny!
ReplyDeleteA warm welcome to Blogland from Italy!
Have a great Sunday!
I LOVE the meanings of names. I have a number of books about their meanings - some on Bible names, as that's the tradition in my husband's family, and some on a wider range of names. My real name means 'noble' but my nickname, Floss, must be short for Florence, so it means an Italian city, I presume!
ReplyDeleteLet us know more about your hens when you get them - my son and I are considering getting some too, but it's going to be a while...
ooh thank you . My first comment apart from the Griffins !( who encouraged me )
ReplyDeleteNot looking forward to the poop !
Wow - we have kindred-spirit cats! Thanks for stopping by and reading my blog.
ReplyDeleteHello! Just popped by to take a look! Love hens, and I have got a coop, but as yet no hens to put in it. I like the name Martha, and I would definitely choose similar names for my hens, also Gertrude, Hatty, Doris! Made we want to get some now. Maybe some ex battery hens?!!
ReplyDeleteSuzie! x
Thank you. I have many names but have to stop at three hens although I've been offered four.
ReplyDeleteHave a little hamster & rabbit graveyard in the garden which include a Hetty & Lulu.
Oh Good grief! Hetty and Lulu... Why do I feel like I've just fallen into Lark Rise and there are cutesy women in bonnets called... well Hetty and Lulu?
ReplyDeleteOi BP, behave yourself! I was going to say, you wouldn't call a cat a Laura Ashley name... but you would, wouldn't you?!!... sigh!
Umm well no there's Bramble ( Bim ) next post about him, Frankie the princess and Billy the kit...but ya know all this aweady !
