We are lucky enough to have a village green so you can imagine all the fetes and shows we get. A few years ago the dog show was re-instated so I entered Dill who was a pup then...a glorious bundle of blond fluff with a huge smile & a very waggy tail ( how we chose him...for his wag )
He didn't win a thing ...not a sausage ! Huh.
The following year I was asked if I'd help on the organising team. I hate being on committees but I offered to do the refreshments. I didn't mind helping as all proceeds were going to the building fund for our much needed community centre. Wee man was still at primary school so I rounded up all the cake making mums ( I'm not one ) and all my elderly neighbours to get baking...we got heaps !
I made little badges with the above logo ( wouldn't believe I went to art college would you ? ) and asked a few close friends to help on the day.
The organisers were having trouble finding a " celebrity " ( oh how I hate what this has become ) to open the show, so I emailed them and suggested getting someone to dress up in a Snoopy costume. I got a curt reply " Let's not get Snoopy, Honestly Penny. "
That week I wanted to get the lounge carpet cleaned ( pongy from dog ) and rang a number in a local advertiser. The woman who answered had such a familiar voice I knew it had to be a former BBC south weather girl turned radio presenter for radio Solent - the channel I listen to. We got chatting ( the carpet business is her husband's ) and I found myself asking her if she would open the dog show ! She said she'd be delighted to & she'd bring her son.
I emailed the organisers and said, " how about *** ? " Boy, did I earn some brownie points !
The show was a huge success and the BBC weather girl really charming.
Just shows..you don't get nowt unless you ask !
What a great story! I felt my first motherhood flush of 'helping out' over the last year. I'd been warned about it from friends with older children and I wasn't too excited about the prospect. There was a Chritmas Fayre to craft for and later a summer Childrens Festival to paint scenes for. In the end I really enjoyed it! I didn't get over involved though, some parents relish it but I tend to shy away; I'm a 'doer' rather than an 'organiser' so I'm happy to do a job I'm given but I'm no good at rounding up the troops! :) x
ReplyDeleteIt can take over. My daughter's drummer friend asked if I could find out how he could get a spot at our village arts & music festival. I made some enquiries and....next thing I know I'm running a monthly youth band night !!!! It's fun tho - the kidz are 13 - 17 and some of them are pretty good. I must remember to get their autographs now !!!
ReplyDeleteYes, but did she wear the Snoopy costume?!
ReplyDeleteYou mean Dill didn't win the Waggiest Dog medal?
You shoulda said, 'Dahlinks I'd be happy to open the show... and I won't even charge my usual fee!'
Annie said,"...so you don't want Snoopy ...how about Scooby Doo?!"
